The theme this week in our 52 week project is FRUIT.
When we were growing up we lived only a block away from my grandparents. We had to walk to the end of the street and then over 2 houses and we were at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I loved it! Grandma would sometimes meet us at the end of the street and walk the rest of the way with us, especially if it was dark out. If we wouldn’t get our way with our parents, off to Grandma’s house we went! Spending time with my grandparents is probably one of my favorite childhood memories.
Grandpa was known for his yard and his garden. His garden used to be 1/2 block length by 1/4 block width (I don’t know actual size!). And his fruit trees..oh we loved those. He had apple trees, plum trees, choke cherry trees, cherry trees, juneberry trees…you name it, he had it. I loved picking plums off of the tree and eating them. Grandma still picks apples off the tree for pies. Mmmm, Grandma’s homemade apple pie.
I’m lucky enough to still see my grandparents every day. I was there the other day with Jase and we were walking around looking at the trees with Grandpa. It’s so funny how much Jase loves the fruit trees now too! He’s so excited to pick apples, but wasn’t too happy when Grandma told him he had to wait until they were ripe. So he picked cherries instead so he could feed them to the birds and the baby “chipmunk”.
I’m so thankful I can still walk around with my Grandpa and enjoy his trees and garden. It’s some of my fondest childhood memories and I enjoy it just as much now as I did when I was younger.
